Unique identification
Assign a universal identifier – GIAI or GTIN + serial number – to each vehicle, part and component to ensure end-to-end traceability.
- GIAI
- GTIN
Identify, mark, share. Three steps towards a fully digital, interoperable and competitive railway sector.

Partnership signed on May 27, 2025
The FIF × GS1 France partnership is directly aligned with the Strategic Contract for the Railway Sector 2024-2027 (CS2F), signed in June 2024 as part of France 2030. This contract explicitly stipulates the use of GS1 standards for multi-actor data sharing between manufacturers, operators, maintainers and equipment suppliers.
It extends the sector letter of intent of February 2, 2023, whereby the railway stakeholders had committed to converge towards a common language for data. The official signing on May 27, 2025, between Patrick Jeantet (FIF President) and Didier Veloso (Executive President GS1 France) operationalizes this commitment.
Assign a universal identifier – GIAI or GTIN + serial number – to each vehicle, part and component to ensure end-to-end traceability.
Apply a GS1 DataMatrix 2D or an RFID/EPC tag to each part to enable automated reading at all stages of the lifecycle.
Share data via the EPCIS standard to structure collaboration between manufacturers, suppliers, operators and maintainers.
Including railway sector training: Introduction to GS1 standards, EPCIS – Maintenance operation traceability.
Rolling stock and infrastructure: a place for sharing, experimentation and co-construction of future standards.
Connecting with GS1 consultants and the deployment service to transition from standard to operational implementation.
Joint FIF × GS1 events at each organization's premises to share industry feedback.
A day to understand the challenges, terminology, and initial use cases. Recommended for quality, supply chain, IT, and project managers.
Register with the FIF rateOperational Deep Dive: modeling maintenance events, EPCIS integration into an existing IT system, secure inter-actor sharing.
Register with the FIF rateThe discount is reserved for FIF members with up-to-date subscriptions. When registering for a GS1 training course, mention your FIF status in the “partner code” field or contact fif@fif.asso.fr in advance to obtain the code to present to GS1 France.
The entire GS1 France portfolio, including railway sector training courses: Introduction to GS1 standards for the railway sector, EPCIS – Traceability of maintenance operations, as well as cross-functional modules on GTIN, DataMatrix, RFID, GDS and EDI.
Membership of GS1 is only required to obtain a company prefix (which allows you to assign your own GTIN/GIAI). The standards themselves (DataMatrix, EPCIS, exchange formats) are public and usable without membership.
Two entry points: directly via GS1 France on the Rail Interest Communities page, or via the FIF, which can connect you with the managers of the two communities (Rolling Stock / Infrastructure).
Email fif@fif.asso.fr specifying the subject “GS1 Partnership”. We will direct you to the appropriate contact person (training, interest community, deployment advice).
Benefit today from the advantages reserved for FIF members as part of our partnership with GS1 France.
